What is the name of the test to find out how much the baby weighs?
im not sure if its a regular sonogram?
my sister is 35 weeks pregnant. she saw a midwife today who told her that her placenta might have growth retardation because her stomach hasnt grown in the last 10 days but shes going to wait two weeks before she even sees my sister again and then, if theres no growth, she will send her for testing.
im trying to get her a second opinion but i need to find out what type of test shes going to need to check the baby's weight.

If concerned, go to an obstetrician. If it happened to be Abruptio Placentae, it could result in a still birth. I admire those who use mid-wives; however, if complications are indicated...it is better to seek highly professional assistance with the delivery.
See the sources below for more information on pregnancy and abnormalities of pregnancy.
Reply:They estimate by feeling the baby from the outside. This can be off by one pound or more, so it isn't that reliable.
Reply:after 35 weeks, she should be seen every week. 2 weeks is a long time considering she ideally only has 5 weeks to go. None the less the babies lung should be completely developed by the 37th week. And what you are looking for is called a sonogram or ultrasound. And yes...tell her she should be seen by an obstetrician NOW if her midwife thinks something may be wrong or wants to postpone ANYTHING for 2 weeks at this point.
Reply:To check on your baby's growth
Later in pregnancy, if there's any concern that your baby is not growing properly, your practitioner may schedule an ultrasound (or a series of them) to measure certain parts of his body. In particular, she'll be measuring the size of your baby's head, the length of his thigh bone, and the distance around his midsection.

Intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) occurs when the unborn baby is at or below the 10th weight percentile for his or her age (in weeks).
Description
There are standards or averages in weight for unborn babies according their age in weeks. When the baby's weight is at or below the 10th percentile for his or her age, it is called intrauterine growth retardation or fetal growth restriction. These babies are smaller than they should be for their age. How much a baby weighs at birth depends not only on how many weeks old it is, but the rate at which it has grown. This growth process is complex and delicate. There are three phases associated with the development of the baby. During the first phase, cells multiply in the baby's organs. This occurs from the beginning of development through the early part of the fourth month. During the second phase, cells continue to multiply and the organs grow. In the third phase (after 32 weeks of development), growth occurs quickly and the baby may gain as much as 7 ounces per week. If the delicate process of development and weight gain is disturbed or interrupted, the baby can suffer from restricted growth.
IUGR is usually classified as symmetrical or asymmetrical. In symmetrical IUGR, the baby's head and body are proportionately small. In asymmetrical IUGR, the baby's brain is abnormally large when compared to the liver. In a normal infant, the brain weighs about three times more than the liver. In asymmetrical IUGR, the brain can weigh five or six times more than the liver.
Causes and symptoms
Doctors think that the two types of IUGR may be linked to the time during development that the problem occurs. Symmetrical IUGR may occur when the unborn baby experiences a problem during early development. Asymmetrical IUGR may occur when the unborn baby experiences a problem during later development. While not true for all asymmetrical cases, doctors think that sometimes the placenta may allow the brain to get more oxygen and nutrition while the liver gets less.
There are many IUGR risk factors involving the mother and the baby. A mother is at risk for having a growth restricted infant if she:
Has had a previous baby who suffered from IUGR
Is small in size
Has poor weight gain and nutrition during pregnancy
Is socially deprived
Uses substances (like tobacco, narcotics, alcohol) that can cause abnormal development or birth defects
Has a vascular disease (like preeclampsia)
Has chronic kidney disease
Has a low total blood volume during early pregnancy
Is pregnant with more than one baby
Has an antibody problem that can make successful pregnancy difficult (antiphospholipid antibody syndrome).
Additionally, an unborn baby may suffer from IUGR if it has:
Exposure to an infection, including German measles (rubella), cytomegalovirus, tuberculosis, syphilis, or toxoplasmosis
A birth defect (like a severe cardiovascular defect)
A chromosome defect, especially trisomy 18 (Edwards' syndrome)
A primary disorder of bone or cartilage
A chronic lack of oxygen during development (hypoxia)
Placenta or umbilical cord defects
Developed outside of the uterus.
Diagnosis
IUGR can be difficult to diagnose and in many cases doctors are not able to make an exact diagnosis until the baby is born. A mother who has had a growth restricted baby is at risk of having another during a later pregnancy. Such mothers are closely monitored during pregnancy. The length in weeks of the pregnancy must be carefully determined so that the doctor will know if development and weight gain are appropriate. Checking the mother's weight and abdomen measurements can help diagnose cases when there are no other risk factors present. Measuring the girth of the abdomen is often used as a tool for diagnosing IUGR. During pregnancy, the healthcare provider will use a tape measure to record the height of the upper portion of the uterus (the uterine fundal height). As the pregnancy continues and the baby grows, the uterus stretches upward in the direction of the mother's head. Between 18 and 30 weeks of gestation, the uterine fundal height (in cm.) equals the weeks of gestation. If the uterine fundal height is more than 2-3 cm below normal, then IUGR is suspected. Ultrasound is used to evaluate the growth of the baby. Usually, IUGR is diagnosed after week 32 of pregnancy. This is during the phase of rapid growth when the baby should be gaining more weight. IUGR caused by genetic factors or infection may sometimes be detected earlier.
Reply:do not listen to the midwife. just because her stomach hasn't grown, it does not mean that the baby isn't growing. 10 days is not a lot of time. babies only gain a half a pound a week at that stage and you would be able to tell that by measuring the stomach anyway. the only way you can tell how much they weigh is to have a sonogram done. the will take measurements and do an estimate as to how much the baby weighs.
Reply:They can do an ultrasound to determine weight.
The measure the amount of amniotic fluid and a number
of other things.
If there is a strong heartbeat and the baby is moving she
should be fine. I would ask for a second opinion also
in the next few days. They can send her for an ultrasound
to check all measurements. They can do a biophysical scan.

of other things.
If there is a strong heartbeat and the baby is moving she
should be fine. I would ask for a second opinion also
in the next few days. They can send her for an ultrasound
to check all measurements. They can do a biophysical scan.
What do you think of the baby name "Ellica Evie" for a girl?
I really don't care for it.....
What do you think of the baby name "Ellica Evie" for a girl?
When I looked at it, I would have pronounced it "Alicia"...
Is it El-EEH-kah or EL-ick-ah? El-EEH-kah isn't very nice sounding... It sounds like someone who can't correctly say Erika or Alicia. EL-ick-ah is a bit better.
What about Erika Eve or Eryka Eve, if you want a less traditional spelling.
Reply:Angelica Evelyn would be fine. You could get the Elikah sound or Evie. By themselves, though, Ellica's not pleasant to look at or say. It looks incomplete. And, it'll constantly get confused with Alicia.
Reply:Ooo, Ellica is interesting! I've never heard the name before but it sounds so refined and pretty. I don't care for the middle name, but the first name is what counts, so great job on the name!
Reply:I think Ellica is very nice and pretty. NOt so sure about the middle name, but it's your choice. It's not awful, just something I wouldn't use.
Reply:I prefer Eva Elisabeth
Reply:Definitely unique -- I like it!

Baby name? What do you think?
my newborn baby girl is here and is a week old. We named her Ashly Lillian ........... what do you think of the two together?
Baby name? What do you think?
Congrats!
And what a beautiful name! Flows very nice and just looks adorable. Well done.
Reply:I like the 2 names, but you should spell Ashley the correct way.
Everyone will spell it the right way regardless, and you will just get upset. It just makes things simpler for teachers and government offices.
I like Ashley AND Lillian, but not together in that order.
How about
Lillian Ashley?
Lillian Ashe/Ash?
Lily Ashlyn?
Reply:Very Pretty!
Reply:i dont care for the the too l's
sorry
Reply:I think it's a lovely name for a little sweet heart. Ashy Lillian.. it just flows nicely doesn't it? And it grows on you. Good luck with your new little bundle and God bless.
Reply:So Cute and Beautiful! Congrats, and Best of Luck!
Reply:I like it, bot names are kinda long though and it will take her forever to learn to spell when she's 4/5
Reply:I really only like Ashley for a boy (and only this spelling), but Lillian is very pretty and they go nicely together.
Reply:Very cute! Congratulations!
Reply:i think Ashley should be spelled with an e. But other than that, i think ashley is an adorable first name. Congrats!
Reply:No I would have named her Shayla Faye.
Reply:I agree with the aboveanswer. It sounds a little better Lillian Ashley. Ashley is my daughter's middle name.
Reply:Hi,
Congratulations!!
I think if you have decided on the name then why are ya asking? it will put doubt in your mind. I say if you want it stick with it!
Reply:Is Ashly a typo?, if not I highly recommend you spell it the proper way, Ashley Lillian looks much more complete.

Baby Name questions or laws ?
We want to give our baby a different last name as us. BUT... the story is...
My "last name" is my fathers step fathers. And Im NOT giving the name to my kid when hes born. Im want to go back to my fathers original name which is Lee.
So my question is , what kind of problems will I run into if my kid has a different last name than me and my wife?
His name would be either
Kai Young Lee Adair
or
Kai Young Adair Lee
and my name and wifes name isnt even close except for the Adair part which is hypenated with my 'fake' last name
Baby Name questions or laws ?
I don't know about "problems" you would have, other than some people questioning you about it, which isn't really a bad thing.
You could also get your name last changed legally too in order to have the same last name as your son. Then you wouldn't have to worry about your step-grandfather's name either

And if you don't like the names, give some suggestions.

Reply:I like Fabian Andreas

Reply:Santiago Rey. Fabian reminds me of Fabio. Eeewww!
Reply:Santiago Rey has a nice ring to it. But I also like Sebastian, Gregorio , and Diego
Reply:Wow, they must really want their child to be picked on in school.
The middle name doesn't matter because nobody will ever use it.

Is it ok while deciding baby name?
is it normal to start thinking about baby names even before conceiving??
Is it ok while deciding baby name?
I have done it!!! I do not see the harm in it. It gives you something to do and keeps you hopeful. Good luck and baby dust!
Reply:baby making os so exciting, of course its normal to think of baby names. if you are ttc i bet you have also thought about what kind of parents you will be, and what it will be like to have a baby in your home :) hey maybe you even thought about schools already :) :) :) :)
we had a list of names before we started trying. and i couldnt help going to the baby section in the store and looking at the cute little outfits, and trying to imagine my own baby in them :)
Reply:I've had baby names picked out for a lonnngggg time. Be careful about telling people what you would name your baby though, they tend to steal them lol. Had that happen with the names I had picked out. Had the names since I was 12, they were taken last year :(
Good luck!
Reply:Heh, I knew my babies first name (for a boy) when I was 14 years old. I'm just glad the hubby likes it.
If we are blessed enough to have a bouncing baby boy, his name will be Trevor Alexander... :D
Reply:Yeah, I think everyone thinks about baby names years before they have a baby, it's just one of those things most people have to decide one day so might as well start planning now.
Reply:no. ive thought of names since i was little. a little more seriously now of course =)
Reply:sure it is.

Baby name last name question....?
I have a boyfriend but we are not married. I don't really want to give the baby his last name but he says that it's disrespectful if I don't.
What do you guys think about this?
Baby name last name question....?
Give the baby your last name..
Reply:Historically, this is what I have seen.
Guys who aren't serious enough to commit to marrying the mom, won't stick around until the child is grown.
Moms who's child is named for the absent father or his relatives
finds her negative emotions aimed at the child, rather than toward the absent father.
Thinking longterm and for the emotional health of both mother and child, If and when the parents are married - the child would take the name of the father.
If the father has not married the mother by the time of the birth,
I believe wisdom shows it is better for the baby to have the mother's last name.
Reply:You could always give the baby both your last names, like hyphen them. Like Johnson-Smith, for example. Your last name should be first, then his.
If you don't think your relationship will last that long, it's probably better to give the baby your last name.
But, if you are planning on getting married in the future, then it would be better to give the baby his last name. Then you wont have to go through the trouble of changing the baby's last name to his when you do get married.
Reply:It isn't disrespectful at all. In fact, it is disrespectful of him to act like he has more claim over the last name than you do simply because he is the guy. Give the baby your last name.
20 years ago people told women it was disrespectful not to take a man's name when they got married. Sometimes people are so old-fashioned and ridiculous.
Reply:Perhaps he should marry the mother of his baby before offering his unimportant opinion. You should definitely not give your baby any surname other than yours especially on it's passport. It can make travel in some areas of the world tricky, you may be required to show papers to prove the child is yours. Tell your BF it's more disrespectful to get someone pregnant but not marry them!!
Reply:Do you live together? Are you planning on getting married? If not, I'd give the baby your last name, because it could be hard having a different last name than your child if this guy is out of the picture. If you think he'll stick around, then give the baby daddy's name.
Reply:I'm not married and my baby has my last name and to this day I couldn't have made a better decesion give the baby your last name then if you do get married then you can change it to his if you wish go with what you want to do. Dont listen to the person above her husband is probably a control freak. U do what you want I did the same and I love that i made that decision even if they didnt' want me too
Reply:i do believe it is disrespectful if you dont' give the baby the dad's last name. he helped make it and he should get some acknowledgement in the situation. you are naming him on the birth certificate aren't you.
Reply:I don't think its disrespectful. Maybe you could use his first name as your child's first or middle name if its a boy, with your last name. Or if it's a girl, you could use his surname as the middle name.
Reply:It isn't disrespectful. It's your choice.
Reply:Me and my fiance hyphened our last names, McCorgan-Pitt. Just an idea. Also a reasonable solution.
Reply:Try a compromise. Give the baby his last name for a middle name.
Reply:well u must be serious with this guy so u guys should both decided and hopefully you'll work out something
Reply:I would hyphenate both of your last names. Preferably yours-his.
Reply:Thats wierd either get married or don't take his name
Reply:i wouldnt if you dont want then give the baby your name
Reply:i would give the babyyy your last name..

Baby name ideas!?!?
So me and my boyfriend have come up with some baby names. For the girl I like the name Laila Alexis, or Suby Grace, and for the boy my boyfriend likes Blake Robert.
Just some opinions on what you all think.
Baby name ideas!?!?
They're all very unique. I love the name Laila Alexis and the spelling too. Don't worry about what other people are saying about your names, hunny. Follow your hearts because it's not them having the baby..and none of these people will ever even meet your baby, so do whatever you want.
Reply:Laila Alexis: I don't like the double A with LailA Aexis. I don't think it flows well at all. I also prefer Layla to Laila. If you go with Layla, choose a more classic middle name like:
Layla Catherine
Layla Madeline
Layla Caroline
Suby Grace: I'm sorry, but what on earth is a "Suby"? I really hope you meant Ruby! In that case, Ruby Grace is a great name.
Blake Robert: My ex just had a baby named Blake and I could not figure it out. It's like naming a new baby Bryan. It just doesn't fit...it's such a dated name. Robert is a nice middle name though. I actually prefer Robert Blake.
Reply:I adore the name "Laila Alexis" - it flows perfectly and sounds beautiful. I'm not keen at all on "Suby" - how about "Ruby" instead? "Ruby Grace" is gorgeous, I'd find it hard to pick between the two!
"Blake Robert" sounds a little awkward personally although it depends on baby's surname. I think it flows better reversed to "Robert Blake" but that's just my opinion. Go with your hearts
Reply:Unlike everyone else, I like Suby. It's original, I haven't heard of any other child named it.
I also like Laila, that's a very sweet name. Love the spelling as well, once again very original.
Blake is an okay name, but with Robert after it, it seems to bland, two commonly used names after each other. I still like Blake though
:D
Reply:Laila Alexis is great!!
My son and I have the first 2 initials LA so now I'm obsessed with finding the same for a second child (don't worry, I won't steal yours...lol)
I really like the spelling you chose for Laila. I also like Blake Robert (Robert is a nice strong name)
Reply:those names don't really work for me but how about........
- Paige
- Aiden
-Espyn
- Trent
P.S. Suby is just Busy all mixed around!
hope i helped!
Reply:suby is not pretty at all.... but how about
girl names: myosha, domonique, unique,
boy names: daniel, ryan,
Reply:Sorry, but honestly I don't like these names. Try something more Original.
and those names aren't really good ones. in my opinion.
sorry.
Reply:I like Laila Alexis but I'm not too sure on Suby Grace.
I like Blake Robert as well.!!
Congratulations
and hope I was of some help
Reply:I love Laila but I don't like Suby. Blake is cute but it is very common. My choice out of the girl names would be Laila. :) It's very cute.
Reply:Laila Alexis is cute♥ I don't care for Suby but Grace is alright. Blake is cute but again don't care for Robert.
Reply:i love the name laila alexis and the name grace is nice but suby isnt my fave... blake roberts is a great name its lovely!
Great choice of names!!
:):):)
Reply:I like Laila better than Suby (too much potential for teasing there, imo).
Blake is a nice name, too. :)
Reply:I'm not a fan of Suby. The others are alright.
Reply:I like all three of the names you picked. =)
Reply:my name is a great one. my initals spell the beginging of my name, try doing that with your baby's name =]
Reply:Laila and Blake =]
Reply:ur names are sooo unique
i wanna name my future-kids carmen, michael, rachel, or alice :)

Help with baby name...?
I just found out I am having a girl. We had decided to name the baby Brooks if was a boy.(my maiden name) I know this will be our last child, and I love the name. What do you all think of a girl named Brooks? (please don't suggest Brooke, I don't care for it) Thanks.........this is my first question hope it works...
Help with baby name...?
hmm, idk its just okay but im sure it would grow on ppl. however, her whole life ppl will prob mess up her name and call her brooke by mistake.
Reply:Brooks is very cutee.
Reply:To be honest I'm not keen, sorry
:-)
Reply:Eghhh Im not to crazy about brooks for boy or girl i know they will get teesed it sounds to old trust me im young :p For girl i would say:
Nicole, Kelsey, Macy, Sarah, Hannah, Alexis, Lexi, Taylor, any of those all my friends LOVE those names =] including meeee
and i totally agree with the girl below me how she said people will call her brooke because my friends name is spelled brook and they call her brooke
Reply:I like it. If you're not so sure, use it as a cute middle name. Also, what about Brooklynn? Just a thought.
Reply:I like the name pair it with something like Raina. Raina Brooks (play on words but very cute.)
Reply:I'm not crazy about Brooks, but it's not awful. I just think that she will be called Brooke a lot. If you don't care for Brooke, I'd stay away from Brooks.
Reply:It reminds me a lot of a last name because I knew someone in high school named Steven Brooks but it would be cute as a first name.
Reply:Brooks is a good name for a girl, just pair it with a girly middle name like Kaitlyn or Mikaela.
Reply:I'm sorry but I don't care for Brooks for either a boy or a grl, but less for a girl. I know you said you don't care for Brooke, but it's the same name with one letter different and it's much better for a little girl.
Reply:What's the middle name? At first I didn't like it but then I said it and it is actually a pretty name. I think Samantha,Hannah,or Kaitlin would be good middle names. You should pick something more common and simple for the middle name. The trouble with me is this is our 8th baby(and probably our last, too),and if it's a girl, my hubby wants a more common name and I want something unusual. I don't like names that are just letters put together but this one I actually like. I say go for it.
Reply:Its cute but sounds like a last name.
Reply:I don't really like it for a girl, what about using it as a middle name.

Baby name help!?
What do you think of the name lucy for a baby girl?
I also like sadie.
I'm having twins and we thought of milean after my grandmother who passed away and who i was very close to, we would call the baby miley...like my grandmother.
Baby name help!?
Lucy is very nice. It has class.
Sadie reminds me of a dogs name.
Miley is cute!
Good luck!
Reply:sorry, but i don't really like any of them. here's why:
lucy- i just think of the pig from animal crossing
sadie- its the girls name from the crappiest show ever (disney channel? no way! hehe). it sucked so much that it got canceled after a few shows
milean/miley- people will just mock you for naming your kid after miley cyrus even though you didn't.
Reply:Yeah Lucy's a cute name, but dont you think its a bit too popular? Miley's a sweet name, and I can't think of any Miley's except for Miley Cyrus...I'd go for Miley and Sadie, but hey it's your choice, so you decide. Congratualtions! Good Luck for the future :) xxx
Reply:My Name is Lucie but spelled different. i like it for a name but i don't like how its becoming so popular.

miley after your grandma is also very cute, and nice being named after someone who had importance to you. :)

That would be for a brunette or red-head.
Good luck and congrats!

Reply:Yes , i like Lucy, its beautiful, so is Sadie and Miley(though would probably spell it Milly.
Good choices.
Reply:I like Sadie and Miley. I am not a big fan of Lucy.
Best of luck to you.
Reply:Lucy is so old. name her Kim, Amber, Melissa, Sarah.
Reply:I like lucy its like a 1940's name. Milean is beautiful too but lucy and sadie match better! good luck!
