Cross-Cultural Baby name help!?

My husband and I were married in August and we're now about 12 weeks pregnant. Needless to say, we're both extremely excited! My husband is Indian, and I'm Cuban, so we're having some problems when it comes to finding a name for our baby. Though my husband's family was mostly welcoming, his mother was quite vehemently against our marriage. We eventually came to an understanding and get along now. Picking baby names in Indian culture is a very family oriented process, and I'm not sure of how to please our Indian relatives without neglecting my own family and their name ideas.





Another big thing is the fact that most of the women in my family (My mother, my grandmothers, my sisters, myself) all have names that begin with "Maria" ie. Maria Cristina (my sister), Maria Luisa (My mother). I'm the youngest in my family, and all of my siblingsalready have daughters named "Maria". I really would want to continue my family's traditions while still keeping my husbands as well.





What's a girl to do? How can we incorporate both families and both cultures into one baby's name?

Adela Marie - adela = noble


Baishali Marie - baishali = ancient city


Chitrita Marie - chitritia = picturesque


Dayita Marie - dayita = beloved


Erekhsha Marie - erekhsha = shining


Fritha Marie - fritha = beloved





And I could keep going..... :)

I also had to find a cross-cultural name....and decided upon Anna for an Australian/Japanese daughter. Anna suprisingly has become a very acceptable Japanese name and has it`s own kanji characters to write it.....Japanese people don`t realise that it is also an English name (as well as Spanish,German etc)





Perhaps you could use the name Maria with a more traditional indian name following......or use an Indian name that starts with Ma.

Reply:You can still use Maria as the first part and find something that fits nicely with that in Indian. Then everybodys happy!

or Gopika Maria... etc


I have friends who are also a mixed marriage, she's Indian he's American and they've named their daughter that. and she's gorgeous! Also some of the kids just have English names, and some have mixed, their son's name is Nilesh Thomas for example and their youngest has an all indian name.


All in all you gotta do what you thing it's best for you and your family.
